I was burning. Droplets of sweat formed on my forehead. The air-conditioned bus was no help either. But just one thought kept me going, spending time with her. The bus was stuck up in a traffic jam. It seemed it could take hours to get out of it. I was already running late. She was waiting for me.
I had called her up before leaving the MU cafe. She sounded upset. I could feel the sadness in her voice. I thought, the day with her Ex went no good. The grief in her voice and the low, almost inaudible pitch of her voice made me a bit more restless.
I signaled the driver and got down from the bus. I started walking towards the hotel. I thought it was just a small walk away. But I was wrong. It was almost two kilometers away. I was still burning from the hotness of the chilly paste.
I started walking fast, almost running. I reached. Knock Knock ! She opened the door. A worried expression on her face greeted me. I was gasping for breath with sweat on the forehead and red hot eyes. I sat down and explained her the whole situation. Phew, finally something to rest my ass on ! We, all three of us, left the hotel after a while.
I asked her what she wanted for dinner. Her eyes got big with a smile on her face, just like a child when given a chocolate. Chicken ! She almost screamed. I smiled. We headed towards the nearest non-veg joint. She ordered Chicken Lollipop and Egg Bhurji. Yummmmm. It was like she could read my mind. She could be my soul mate. When they say "Way to a man's heart is through his stomach", they were right.
I could still see the disappointment in her eyes despite a smile on her face. She was eating and soon her mind wandered off. I snapped my fingers to get her attention.
"Where are you lost ?" I asked
"No-where !" She replied with a smile
I took a piece of bread and some bhurji and extended towards her. She looked at me and leaned to eat it. She felt good. I felt amazing. Her eyes went wet, but she didn't cry. That's when I knew that she was strong, emotionally. Otherwise girls break down so easily. She wore the smile for the rest of the evening.
We finished up the dinner and left the restaurant. Her friend left for the hotel, giving us some alone time. By now, I had started to like Arpita's friend. She understood me, eventhough I never told her anything. We took a walk in the neighbourhood. I constantly tried to cheer her up, but unsuccessfully. Although, she did giggle a few times. But she wasn't happy.
After a while we sat on road side. I checked the time. 22:00. She sat there staring into the darkness of the road. It was like she could connect herself to the loneliness of the empty streets. There was a long, extended moment of silence. I just kept staring at her.
"Appy !" I called her trying get her attention.
"Haan ?"
"How was your day ?" I asked.
"Good ! Met Akshay today. We went to the UB City Mall. Chintu, it was so glamorous. I had fun." She was literally excited for a moment. And the very next, she was sad again. Akshay was the Ex-boyfriend.
"So, you guys back together ?" I asked casually. Secretly hoping that the were not.
She didn't speak anything.
"What did he say ?" I asked again.
"I asked him a couple of times about getting back but he didn't respond. He doesn't want me back, Chintu !" A tear rolled down her cheek.
I could feel her sadness. I wiped the tear and said "Listen Appy, if he doesn't want you back, then why are you still hung up on him ? You are sweet, cute, intelligent, amazingly beautiful, extremely hot and mind blowingly sexy. A perfect combination of beauty with brains. Guys long for a girl like you. And I have seen his picture, he is not that great. You can do better." You can do me, I wanted to say. I shushed my heart. Not your time buddy. Not the right time.
"Awwwww. That was so sweet. You are right. I am not going to cry over him." She cheered up.
"So ? What are your plans now ?" I asked
Almost instantly she counter questioned me. "Can we drink tonight ?"
I checked my watch. 23:00. "OK, lets see if we can find any booze." We stood up and started walking. I texted her friend to join us. Apparently, I knew she wanted to drink it off. That is why I asked her friend to join us. She could stop her when it goes off limits.
We bought the booze and headed for my apartment. Her friend joined us there. We sat on the terrace of the penthouse. I poured the drinks for both of us. Smirnoff Vodka. Her friend had refused to join in our little venture. Soon the atmosphere settled down. Cool breeze, soft music, cute company and booze. It was perfect. We finished a bottle of Vodka. I was alright, she was sloshed. She rested her head on my shoulder and asked me to play the song on repeat mode. Edward Maya - Stereo Love. Soon she was sleeping on the terrace with her head on my lap. She felt cold. I got my jackets for both of them and also brought a pair of socks for her. Her friend was enjoying the drunken Appy. It was late in the night, I checked the time. 01:00. I asked her if she wanted to go to her hotel room. She refused. I asked her friend if she wanted to go. She was sleepy. I asked Appy to get up and climb down the ladder. I helped her get down. She could barely stand properly. Me and Her friend took her to their hotel. I tucked her in and wished both of them good night. As soon as I reached my apartment, my cellphone buzzed. Appy Calling.
"Hello." I picked up the call
"Chintu !" She said in a sweet drunken voice.
"Yes Appy ? What happened ?" I asked
"Thank you so much for bringing me to my room." She said.
"Eh ! Don't mention it. Go sleep. We'll talking in the morning. Good Night." I ended the call.
Amidst all this, it completely went unnoticed that I was promoted from being "Chintan" to "Chintu". That meant she considered me as a close friend. I was extremely happy. And this was the first time, when I had a few drinks with a girl and not ended up kissing her. This was something totally new and different for me. But I was loving it. The chain of my thoughts was broken again. Appy Calling.
I picked up the call "Hello."
*sob sob* I could hear her sob.
"What happened ?" I asked
"Chintu ! She is getting angry on me. She shouted at me." *sob sob*
"Acha ! How could she do that ? I'll ask her not to get angry on you. Please pass the phone to your friend." I said consoling her.
She passed the phone. "Hey ! Please don't mind. Just give her an asprin and she will be fine. Good Night. Take care." I ended the call. I smiled and soon dozed off on the couch.
Everything about her felt fresh. Like I was rejuvenating. This was completely new me. I already missed her.
"Love is missing someone whenever you're apart, but feeling warm inside because you're close in heart." Was it LOVE ?
